I was born in Lisbon and lived there for eight years before I moved to the United States about 20 years ago. I go back home multiple times a year as my entire family lives there. Over the last few years, Portugal has become very popular as a travel destination and I couldn’t be more proud of being Portuguese. I was supposed to go to Portugal in April and I’m unable to due to the current travel restrictions. I put together a list of the most instagrammable places in Lisbon so you can get amazing shots if you ever go. If you don’t plan on going to Lisbon then you can simply admire its beauty in the following photos. I can’t wait to go back!
- Casa do Alentejo: This area used to be a Moorish Palace and now serves as a place for people to come together. It features various ballrooms for events, a library, a store and a restaurant. pc: @lisboacocktailguide
- Pink Street: Pink Street is the main and most famous street in the Bairro Alto neighborhood. It is known for its nightlife, restaurants and bars. During the day there aren’t too many people on the street but at night it turns it gets very lively and crowded. pc: @picsur82
- Torre de Belém: One of the most famous sites in Lisbon, Torre de Belém served as a point of embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers. It dates all the way back to the 16th century and it is a four-story tower that is almost 100 feet tall. pc: @fraprx
- Pasteis de Belem: Portugal is known for its famous pastéis de nata which is an egg tart pastry dusted with cinnamon. They are pretty easy to find anywhere in Portugal but one of the best places to go is Pastéis de Belem in Lisbon. You can either eat inside the restaurant or go in the shop and get as many as you want as take out. There is usually a pretty long line but it moves quickly. - Livraria Ler Devagar: It is a two-level bookstore located in one of the coolest places in Lisbon, LX Factory. Ler Devagar, which means “read slowly,” has been voted one of the most beautiful bookstores in the entire world. The bookstore has thousands of books, antique printing machines and sculptures such as its signature flying bicycle. pc: @joaopalgomes
